Dating giant Tinder amps up its in-app security by fortifying the photo verification system with ‘selfie video’ in a bid to curb creepy scammers. The app has made it mandatory to upload the video in order to access the coveted blue checkmark like Twitter.
Earlier tinder users were required to upload pictures of themselves as a part of the verification process. The pictures uploaded would then by compared to other photos of the user on the app to ensure that the person is indeed who he/she is claiming to be.

Verified users will have the option to choose whether or not they wish to received messages from other verified users on the app. The selfie video verification is analogous to other contemporary digital verifications like Apple’s and Google’s State ID process and US based dating apps like Hinge. The latter introduced the video selfie function last year in an effort to counteract the alarming rise in romance scams across several platforms, which also include tragic accounts of auto thefts and even cryptocurrency snatchers.
Tinder’s new selfie verification system will necessitate users to follow a series of video prompts following which AI will deploy a 3D mapping of the user’s face geometry to their photo to determine if the person in the video is who they are claiming to be.
Tinder’s latest upgrade comes during times when scamming via AI photo and video generation is gaining unprecedented momentum. According to the firm, all customers will soon be able to use the new photo verification process.
