Generative AI: Burgeoning Increase In The Domain & Its Ability To Keep Google, Meta & Microsoft On their Toes

Tech Giants Are Harnessing The Unending Potential Of Generative AI

In recent years, one of the most popular buzzwords has been generative AI. It appears that 2023 is likely to see additional breakthroughs in the field owing to its rising popularity within the tech community and increased VC interest as billions are invested into its applications and research.

San Francisco-based AI startup OpenAI made headlines in November of last year when it unveiled its ground-breaking ChatGPT. On November 30, 2022, the Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer, which is based on OpenAI’s big language models, was made available for public testing. The app had an average of 13 million users every day in less than a week.

ChatGPT took the internet by storm a year after the world witnessed OpenAI’s Dall-E. Dall-E was equipped with the ability to generate digital images from natural language descriptions or text prompts from users by incorporating deep learning models. Other OpenAI backed tools such as GPT-3 employ deep learning in order to produce human-like texts to continue from prompts in natural language. Another program called OpenAI Codex transforms prompts in natural language into programming code.

Apparently, there is a common framework that serves as the cornerstone for ChatGPT, DALL-E, Codex, and GPT-3.

What is meant by “Generative AI”?

Generative AI essentially allows people to create material from scratch, including texts, photos, poems, films, audios, and more. A rapidly developing sub-domain of AI, generative AI includes tools like ChatGPT, DALL-E, and Lensa.

AI tools are garnering consumers globally, whether it’s the “Magic Avatar” from Lensa, a feature that enables users to utilise AI to create their stylized images based on their photos, or ChatGPT, which provides human-like responses to text queries. Everyone utilizes AI-generated images, texts, movies, and audios and the facet is luring more users with each passing day.

The immense potential of generative AI has grabbed the attention of companies all across the world and this skyrocketing interest can be attributed to the $2.1 billion funding that generative AI companies garnered in 2022, according to PitchBook.

Let’s take a closer look at how tech behemoths are harnessing the power of generative AI?

Google

ChatGPT’s massive success was followed by the introduction of Alphabet Inc’s Google bot rival, Bard. This revolutionary chatbot uses NLP (Natural Language Processing) and machine learning algorithms to generate human-like responses.

Google products purportedly incorporate their massive language model LaMDA. The Pathways system was used to train Google’s Pathways Language Model (PaLM), which is regarded as a breakthrough in AI and is capable of generalising tasks across domains. It has been said that it can scale up to 540 billion parameters. This indicates that once a task is completed, its performance improves. GPT-3, in contrast, only has 175 billion parameters.

Microsoft

The tech giant invested a whopping $10 billion in OpenAI, the mastermind behind ChatGPT and Dall-E. The significant investment comes after one billion dollars in 2019 and another one in 2021 from Microsoft. In its attempt to surpass competitors like Google, Amazon, and Meta, the investment is anticipated to offer Microsoft access to some of the most cutting-edge AI systems

Meta

Meta has been working on generative AI research for some time. In September last year, Meta announced its Make-A-Video, a new AI system that allowed people to turn their text prompts into brief high-quality videos. The tool follows Meta’s Make-A-Scene, a multimodal generative AI that offers users more control over their AI generated content. Meta claimed that its Make-A-Video was a testament to Meta AI’s progress in the realm of generative technology and has the potential to open new possibilities for creators and artists.
