WhatsApp has released a new update that allows users to transfer their chats from Android phones to iPhones. The feature will be included in Apple’s ‘move to iOS’ app, which implies that new iPhone users will have the choice to transfer data while setting up their device. To use this new update, current Apple iPhone users will need to make a backup and factory reset their phones. On Tuesday evening, Meta CEO and Founder Mark Zuckerberg announced the news in a blog post.
“We’re adding to WhatsApp the ability to securely switch between phones and transfer your chat history, photos, videos, and voice messages between Android and iPhone while maintaining end-to-end encryption. This is a top requested feature. We launched the ability switch from iPhone–>Android last year, and now adding Android–>iPhone as well.” – Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s Founder and CEO.
It’s been a long-awaited feature since there was no method to move WhatsApp data between Android and iPhones until now. There are some third-party tools in the market, but they aren’t reliable. The new WhatsApp feature will be accessible starting today as part of the WhatsApp beta and will be available for all users within a week.

How can I move my WhatsApp chats from Android to iPhone?
- On an Android phone, open the Move to iOS app and follow the on-screen prompts.
- On your iPhone, a code will appear. Enter the code on your Android phone when prompted.
- Press the Continue button and follow the on-screen instructions.
- On the Transfer Data screen, select WhatsApp.
- On your Android phone, press the ‘Start’ button and wait for WhatsApp to prepare the data for export.
- Once the data is ready, you’ll be logged out of your Android phone.
- Return to the Move to iOS app by tapping ‘Next.’
- Tap ‘Continue’ to transfer the data from your Android phone to your iPhone, and then wait for Move to iOS to confirm the transfer.
- Go to the App Store and download the most recent version of WhatsApp.
- Open WhatsApp and sign in with the same phone number as your old device.
- When prompted, tap Start and wait for the process to finish.
- After you’ve finished activating your new device, your chats will be ready for you.

The feature will be available to everyone operating Android 5 or later and iOS 15.5 or later. Apart from that, users just need to follow some simple guidelines, such as making sure their phones are powered up and connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Users will have to connect their Android device to the iPhone’s hotspot if both phones are not on the same Wi-Fi network.
WhatsApp states that all data is encrypted end-to-end, and that the platform will not be able to access any of the chats or data. Unless users delete their WhatsApp, account or clean their phone completely, the old Android phone will keep all data.
