Indian Army Launches Messaging Apps Similar To WhatsApp For Jawans

Following the “Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan”, the Indian Army, on Thursday, launched a messaging app, named SAI which stands for “Secure Application for the Internet” which will support an end-to-end secure voice, text and even video calling services for Android platform over the internet, said the Ministry of Defence.

A statement from the Indian Army read, “The model (of SAI) is similar to commercially available messaging applications like WhatsApp, Telegram, SAMVAD and GIMS and utilises end-to-end encryption messaging protocol,”.

The Secure Application for the Internet (SAI), will be utilised by all the Army at every level to facilitate secure messaging within the service. The statement said, “The application supports end-to-end secure voice, text and video calling services for Android platform over internet,”

The main security feature of SAI includes local in-house servers this means SAI scoring high on security all the data and hosting will be done in-house and even the coding is in-house and this can be tweaked as per requirements.

Additionally, the process for filing the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR), hosting the infrastructure on the National Informatics Centre (NIC) and working on the iOS platform is currently in progress.

The application has been vetted by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-in) empanelled auditor and the Army Cyber Group, the statement noted.

Defence Minister of India Rajnath Singh reviewed the functionalities of the SAI app and complimented Colonel Sai Shankar for his skill and ingenuity for the development of this application.
