- PUBG Mobile was the highest-grossing game in the globe last month
- The game made more than $ 226 million in May
- Though it is a Free to Play game, it does offer in-app purchases
PUBG Mobile, which was released back in 2018, and was already one of the top mobile games worldwide, in May, became the highest revenue grossing game worldwide for the month.
According to the new report, the game grossed more than $226 million (or around Rs. 1,700 crores) in user spendings, making it the highest-grossing game in May in the entire world.
The report claims that the majority of the revenue for the game came from China.
The revenue calculated was from the App Store and Google Play store globally between 1st May and 31st May 2020.
Though the revenue number is huge, it does not come as a huge surprise given the immense popularity of the game and the fact the virtually the whole world was under the lockdown which forced people to stay indoors and invest their time and energy in games and other activities.
In India as well, the mobile game Ludo King has witnessed a surge in growth and boost of revenues fro the same reason.
According to the reports by Sensor Tower, the mobile app store marketing intelligence, PUBG Mobile made over $ 266 million in May alone. This was a 41% growth in revenues over May 2019. The report also states that out of the $ 226 million, more than 50% came from China alone, 10.2% came from the US and 5.5% came from Saudi Arabia.
Though PUBG Mobile is a Free to Play mobile game, one thing to note is that it does offer in-app purchases which give players boosts and many other rewards.
PUBG Mobile was followed by Honor of Kings which is also published by Tencent. The game, Honor of Kings, made $ 204.5 million (around Rs. 1,500 crores) in May 2020 which was a growth of 42% from 2019’s May.
Around 95% of the revenue of Honor of Kings came from China, as the game is predominantly for the Chinese market, having said that, a global version of the game was released back in 2017 called Arena of Valor.
PUBG Mobile was one of the most famous games especially for the Battle Royale mode since its launch in 2018, in 2020, due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic people were forced to stay indoors which further increased the time people spend playing this game.
