Aarogya Setu, India’s very own COVID-19 tracker, was launched on the 2nd of April 2020 and in May was extended to the Jio Phone models which now has been downloaded by more than 3 crore users on Jio handsets as per the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) tweet posted on Monday.
On the Google Play store, the Aarogya Setu app shows it has been downloaded more than 10 crore times.
Aarogya Setu was first launched for both Android and iOS devices and then in May was rolled out to the KaiOS platform to increase the reach. Both Jio Phone and Jio Phone 2 run on KaiOS.
On the 2nd of April, the government unveiled the Aarogya Setu application in the country in an attempt to contain the spread of the novel Coronavirus. The COVID-19 tracker uses both Bluetooth and your location to trace interaction with the people who have tested positive for the deadly virus or could test positive in the near future.
Since its launch, the app has been promoted by a number of government officials including the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. When Aarogya Setu was launched, that app crossed 50 lakh installs within three days of its launch.
Having said that, when the app was launched it was available to around 50 crores of smartphone users of the Indian population but no to other 40 crores who use basic feature phones. 1 month after it was launched, the government extended it to Jio phones.

Now with the extended reach of the Aarogya Setu app, the government is hopeful to be able to better track the spread of the novel Coronavirus in India. However, the growth of the application is also being attributed to the stringent rules which have been imposed by the government on its download.
Earlier last month, the government made it mandatory for people to have Aarogya Setu app for all public and private sector employees when it announced yet another extension of the lockdown across the country due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
The rules were relaxed around 2 weeks later when it was stated that the “district authorities may advise individuals to install the Aarogya Setu application” on their phones.
Recently, the app was also made compulsory for airline passengers along with other precautionary measures while traveling. Aarogya Setu app has also been called out for its privacy concerns.
