Android 11 Is Google's Most Popular Mobile Operating System

Highlights:

  • Android 10 comes in second place with a 23.9 percent share.
  • The decrease in Android 10 user base is clearly related to the increased number of phones releasing with Android 11 out of the box.
  • Android 9 has a 16.9% share, whereas Jelly Bean has the lowest at 0.4%.

Android 11 is now Google’s most popular smartphone operating system. The Pixel 6 manufacturer has updated its chart depicting the percentage of Android devices running various operating system versions. However, no information on Android 12 devices is included in the list.

According to the most recent data, Android 11 is installed on 28.3 percent of all Android smartphones. It is an increase over the previous data, which indicated an overall install base of 24.2%. Android 10 comes in second place with a 23.9 percent share. While the Android version is second on the list, its total share has decreased. Android 9 Pie comes in third with 16.2 percent of the market, followed by Android 8 Oreo with 11.6 percent. As you can see, the numbers decrease with each previous version. This is not surprising given that a new Android version is launched every year and most users update to the most recent version.

Previously, Android 10 was the most popular version, accounting for 26.5 percent of the entire market share.

The decrease in Android 10 user base is clearly related to the increased number of phones releasing with Android 11 out of the box. Android 9 has a 16.9% market share, whereas Jelly Bean has the lowest at 0.4%.

Google provided no information on the Android 12 user base. According to 9to5Google, this might be linked to helping developers in determining whether Android versions should be supported at all. Using the chart, developers may determine how many potential consumers they would lose if they do not support an older Android version. As a result, knowing the number of users running Android 12 or Android 12L, the most recent publicly available versions, may not be as helpful. It would have been fascinating, though, to examine the data available around Android 12.

Apple, Google’s arch-rival, frequently discloses iOS active user base data. The company said in January that iOS 15 is loaded on 72% of all iPhones launched in the previous four years. iOS 14 is used by around 26% of active users, whereas 2% use an earlier version of iOS.
