Highlights: Apple unveiled its new iPhone 14 lineup, three new Apple Watch models, the long-rumored Apple Watch Ultra, and the AirPods Pro 2 headphones during its Far Out event.
Physical SIM trays won't be given by Apple with the iPhone 14 models sold in the US. The iPhone 14 will instead use an eSIM, also known as a digital SIM card. According to Apple, eSIMs are more secure and should make switching carriers simple for customers.
The notch is replaced in the design of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max with a pill-shaped cutout that houses the camera and Face ID technology underneath the display. As notifications will come and move about this area, Apple refers to it as the "dynamic island."
With a larger 6.7-inch screen and longer battery life, Apple unveiled a new Plus model. The 12-megapixel True Depth selfie camera on both devices has autofocus and an upgraded 12-megapixel primary camera sensor.
For emergencies in the US and Canada, Apple is adding satellite connectivity to the new iPhone 14 and 14 Pro. To contact a nearby emergency service with an SOS, aim your phone at the nearest satellite.
The latest Apple Watch SE was also introduced which includes an improved S8 chip that makes it 20% faster than the 2020 model. It also shares several features with the Watch Series 8, such as defect detection.
With a bigger 49mm titanium case, Apple's new Watch Ultra offers a more robust design for sportsmen participating in extreme sports. The new Oceanic Plus app, which gives up to 36 hours of battery life on a single charge, enables Ultra users to check underwater dives.
While watchOS 9 adds a number of new fitness monitoring metrics, iOS 16 enables new features for the lock screen, including widgets and notifications that roll up from the bottom of the screen.
