The video game’s storyline centres on the Delta Squad, a squad of fighters. They engage in combat with the Locust Horde, a subterranean alien civilization that aims to eradicate mankind. The main warriors of the Delta Squad are Marcus Fenix, Dominic “Dom” Santiago, Augustus Cole, and Damon Baird. They use a variety of heavy weapons, rocket launchers, and lancers, which are guns with chainsaws attached to them, to destroy the Locust swarms.

Gears of War focuses on cover-based combat, where players can use weapons to deflect gunfire or attack opponents while maintaining security. Gears of War: Judgement, which was released in 2013, and Gears Tactics, which was released in 2020, are two prequels to the series. Gears of War 2 was released in 2008, Gears of War 3 in 2011, Gears of War 4 in 2016, and Gears 5 in 2019. Even the most recent Gears Tactics, which supports smart delivery and runs at sixty frames per second in 4K Ultra HD, has been optimised for Xbox Series X by Coalition.
