Highlights:

  • IIT student develops a TikTok like app called Mitron
  • Mitron has garnered more than 5 million (50 lakh) downloads in just over a month
  • The app is available on Google Play Store

Mitron is one of the latest addition to the Google Play Store which comes directly from India and has gained a lot of popularity in recent weeks after emerging as one of the competitors of TikTok. Mitron which was released just little over a month ago has already garnered more than 5 million or 50 lakh downloads, these downloads come at a time when TikTok is facing a major backlash in India due to many major controversies.

At a time when anti-China sentiment is at a high, people are seeing reviews on Mitron saying, “Lots of bugs. Missing tons of features. Supporting as its Indian.”

The app has been developed by a student from IIT Roorkee named Shivank Agarwal and looking at the application for the first time you will notice it is virtually a clone o TikTok.

Currently, Mitron ranks 7th on the list of Free Apps on the Google Play Store leaving behind the likes of Facebook, Instagram and Helo. It falls behind Aarogya Setu app (ranks 1st) and TikTok (ranks 2nd) on the list, however, on Monday, the former Senior Vice President (VP) of Paytm, Deepak Abbot shared a tweet saying the app ranks number 2 on the list.

In all honesty to our readers, Mitron does not offer any Unique Selling Proposition (USP) which would make it stand out by such a great length, however, the combination of a good brand name – Mitron which means Friends in Hindi and is also an extremely familiar word used by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi – and the anti-TikTok sentiment of the Indian population could be the reasons behind its rise.

The question remains whether Mitron will be able to last in such a competitive market as the application has already started to lose some momentum.

Keeping aside the positive rating of the application and many positive reviews, there have been many critical feedbacks as well, as many users have pointed out that the app has a lot many bugs, the basic features such as editing are not supported yet and even the login option is buggy along with the feedback of the audio is limited. Keeping it aside, many reviews have one thing in common that they start with the phrase “I am glad this is an Indian platform”.

Another question which could be the making or the breaking point for Mitron is the ability of its developer to use this early momentum and add new features and remove the bugs before the users lose their patience and move on to try some other application(s).

What is Mitron?

The Mitron app is a free short-video sharing and social platform and the developer says that this app is designed for the people to “showcase their innovative video online” with light humour. The description of the video reads, “Our mission at Mitron is to create a platform where people can come and entertain themselves with small videos posted by people across the globe and at the same time create a social incentive for people to share and create their own videos,”.

When our team gave the app a go, we noticed that even the User Interface (UI) of Mitron is similar to that of TikTok and as far as the content goes, it could be differentiated a little. The biggest point, though, is the fact that just like videos present on most of the social media platforms today, on Mitron, too, you will find videos with the TikTok logon on them.

How Did Mitron App Get So Many Downloads?

Mitron, in just over a month, has managed to get more than 50 lakh installs from the Google Play Store and one of the possible explanations for such a hype of this app is the anti-TikTok rage in India especially after the video shared by Faizal Siddiqui last week which promoted acid attack as an act of revenge.

Due to this and many other controversies over a time of a couple of months, TikTok has seen a flood of bad reviews and ratings on both App Store from Apple and Google Play Store. Similarly, the name of the app itself is huge traction for many Indians as the term, Mitron (meaning friends) has been widely used by Prime Minister Modi over the years.

How To Download Mitron App?

Anyone with an Android smartphone can download this application for free from the Google Play Store. The application is free to use, however, is not available on iOS.

How To Use Mitron App?

Using Mitron is fairly easy, and if you have used TikTok in the past, voila, you know almost everything you will need to know. Just like TikTok, a user can see the videos just by download the app and making an account is not mandatory, however, it becomes mandatory when you want to leave a like on the video or upload a video of your own.
