Meta Announces The Digital Clothing Store Where Users Can Buy Clothes For Their Avatars

Highlights:

  • In a Facebook post, Zuckerberg announced the launch of the “Avatars Store.”
  • The participating labels include Balenciaga, Prada, and Thom Browne.
  • Meta intends to turn the store into an open marketplace where developers can design and sell clothes.

Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta Inc (previously Facebook), announced the launching of the “Meta Avatars Store,” a designer clothing store for digital avatars. On an Instagram live, Zuckerberg and Instagram’s vice president of fashion partnerships, Eva Chen, made the announcement.

In the metaverse, an avatar is more than just a user-created appearance. It is your identity.  Every avatar is one-of-a-kind, with seemingly endless possibilities. Avatars have humanoid characteristics such as movable limbs, upper and lower torsos, and an expressive face. You can buy clothes for your avatars in the same way that you can in the real world. These essential digital outfits can be purchased and sold on a marketplace.

In a post on Facebook Zuckerberg wrote, “We’re launching our Avatars Store on Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger so you can buy digital clothes to style your avatar. Digital goods will be an important way to express yourself in the metaverse and a big driver of the creative economy. I’m excited to add more brands and bring this to VR soon too.”

According to Zuckerberg, the store would sell digital clothes from designers like Balenciaga, Prada, and Thom Browne, with more names to follow. Next week, the store will be launched. The price of digital apparel is yet to be revealed. Free clothing for digital avatars, on the other hand, will continue to be accessible.

According to TechCrunch, the Meta Avatars Store will launch in the United States, Canada, Thailand, and Mexico next week.

This comes only weeks after Meta updated its 3D avatars on Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram, allowing users in the country to build 3D avatars of themselves, as part of its goal to become a metaverse platform. Your 3D Avatar is a cartoon representation of yourself that is meant to represent how you appear in a virtual world. These 3D Avatars have previously been released in a number of other countries, and they are now accessible in India. You may use your Facebook Avatar on Facebook, the Messenger App, Instagram Stories and DMs, and the Meta Quest headset.
